The CO_2 Reduction through Mixture Design of Green Concrete and Its Significant Contribution

【Abstract】

<正>A variety of actions to implement sustainability in concrete industry have been early taken at Taiwan with many strategies.The strategies,less cement in concrete mixtures, enhancing the durability of new construction and selecting low-impact construction methods,are mainly discussed in this study in order to represent the process for CO_2 emssion reduction in concrete industry.The history of the development of sustainability in concrete industry in Taiwan is summarized.Low-carbon-emission concrete mix design methods used in concrete industry are introduced.In addition,many successful application cases of the methods in construction site are also discussed in this study. Through the research and practice,it can be seen that all five requirements,jlowage, safety,durability,economy and ecology for concrete,can be met when using the mix design methods.Many successful application cases have proved for the likely practicality of the mix design methods such as the construction of Taipei 101,one of the world's tallest buildings.These are good examples for constructor,researcher and government sector work together to use less water content and less cement content in concrete mix design.The pozzolanic materials can be used up to 50%of total cementitious materials in concrete while satisfying desired strength or even higher.Up to 99 -187 kg CO_2 emissions can be reduced per each m3 concrete.A huge amount of trees necessary to offset the CO_2 emissions can be saved such as the amount of CO_2 emission reduction in the construction of Taipei 101 building by the use of low-carbon-emission concrete mix design tantamount to planting 139,230 trees.
