Using the trade statistic data of China and its partners from countries along the Belt and Road, we investigated the intra-industry trade between those countries and its determinants. The results show that: (1) intra-industry trade between China and countries along the Belt and Road are relatively low, which pushes us to build a platform to enhance cooperation and promote intra-industry trade among developing countries; (2) from the regional perspective, the intra-industry trade between China and ASEAN countries are relatively more intense than the other regions in the Belt and Road; (3) among the determinants of intra-industry trade, market size and openness have a positive impact on intra-industry trade, while income per capita and FDI have a significant negative effect on it; (4)the determinants of intra-industry trade varies among different industries. Therefore, we should take full advantage of the Belt and Road initiative to build a self-dominated Global Value Chain, and promote the intra-industry trade among developing countries, which should be an important step towards China’ s new open economic strategy.
