This paper uses 138 articles as sample collected in 7 Chinese top-tier academic journals in the field of economic and management from 2000 to 2018. Using systematic literature review and content analysis method, the research status and research knowledge structure of Chinese manufacturing industry in global value chain are explored and summarized. We also identify the gaps in the field to previous knowledge and attempt to put forward the future research agenda. Research findings are as follows: First, the knowledge structure of the global value chain research field is mainly composed of seven parts: the concept of the global value chain, governance structure, type, embedded position measurement, status of Chinese manufacturing industry in global value chain status, constraints and climbing policy suggestions, and constitution of the research framework of 2W1H. Second, at the national, industry, and corporate levels, we summarize the factors that constrain the rise of Chinese manufacturing companies to the high end of the value chain and the recommendations to improve. Finally, we also put forward some research gaps and concrete and feasible suggestions for future research from three dimensions which are research content, research design, and research context.
