Unit Commitment by Enhanced Adaptive Lagrangian Relaxation with an Improved Unit Substitution Heuristic

【Abstract】

This paper proposes an improved unit substitution(IUS) heuristic for the enhanced adaptive Lagrangian relaxation(ELR) method in literature to solve the unit commitment(UC) problem.The ELR exploits unit substitution and unit decommitment to refine the UC schedule obtained from an adaptive Lagrangian relaxation heuristic.The IUS addresses several serious issues associated with the unit substitution heuristic used in the ELR,such as the rationale for substituting a committed unit with some uncommitted units,the infeasibility with respect to the minimum up/down time constraints,the consideration of peak load units in the substitution,and the correct sequence of unit decommitment and unit substitution.Preliminary simulation results on a test case with a 10-unit power system and a 24-hour planning horizon demonstrate that IUS is promising in furthering improving the power generation cost for the ELR.
